What is Myrrh Essential Oil?

Myrrh is a wild desert shrub with thorny branches, small leaves and sharp thorns. The resin of the shrub secretes milky juices. When it dries you get Myrrh resin with its spicy and bitter aroma. Myrrh Essential Oil is extracted from myrrh resin by steam distillation.

Where is it from?

Myrrh originally comes from Somalia, but can now be found in various parts of Africa as well as the Middle East and India.

Benefits of Myrrh Essential Oil

Anti-fungal

Myrrh Essential Oil contains anti-fungal properties. It is often used for athlete’s foot and fungal nails, but also for thrush and fungi on the scalp.

Myrrh Essential Oil can help with respiratory infections such as bronchitis, cough, sore throat and colds. It helps you cough up stuck mucus better and helps you breathe more freely.

Ideal to use as a gargle. Myrrh Essential Oil can be used to support oral care. The antibacterial properties can help with gum infections, canker sores and bad breath.

How do you use Myrrh Essential Oil?

In Bath

Add 8 drops of Myrrh Essential Oil and 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil to a warm bath.

As a skin oil

Add 5 drops of Myrrh Essential Oil and 6 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil to 50 ml of carrier oil (e.g. Argan oil) and apply to the skin.

As a mouthwash

Add 1 drop of Myrrh Essential Oil and 1 drop of Clove Essential Oil to 20 ml of water and rinse the mouth for 30 seconds.

In a steam bath

Mix 3 drops of Myrrh Essential Oil with 3 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil and add this to a basin with a layer of hot water. Hang your head above the steam and cover your head with a towel. Inhale the steam through your nose.

As Aromatherapy

Add 4 drops of Myrrh Essential Oil and 3 drops of Bergamot Essential Oil to the water reservoir of a diffuser. NB! Do not use in the sun. May cause phototoxicity and skin irritation. Maximum dosage for the skin: 0.60% on 100 ml carrier oil or cream.
