What is prickly pear oil?

Pure prickly pear oil is a skin oil made from the kernels of prickly pears. You can recognize this skin oil by its iconic yellowish color. Prickly pears are yellow or sometimes red fruits with a pear shape that, as the name suggests, grow on prickly pear cacti (Opuntia ficus-indica). The prickly pear is therefore also known as ‘desert fig’, ‘prickly pear’ and prickly pear . Each prickly pear contains hard kernels, each containing only 5% oil. This means that for 1 liter of skin oil you need no less than 1,000 kilos of prickly pears. In addition, it takes approximately 35 to 40 man-hours to produce 1 liter of oil.

From prickly pear seeds to oil

The oil made from prickly pear is very expensive, because its production is an intensive and long-lasting process. The figs are first harvested by hand. The seeds must then be separated from the pulp. The harvested prickly pear seeds are washed and then allowed to dry in the sun. After this, the kernels are pressed at a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius to produce cold-pressed prickly pear oil. Because the prickly pear kernels are so hard, a special head is used and the press is set to a low speed. Why is cold pressing important? In pure, cold-pressed prickly pear oil, all active substances are still present. When pressing hot or too fast, powerful substances are lost more than once.

Prickly pear oil for your skin

The skin oil made from prickly pear has a sweet, spicy scent and a light texture. This allows the oil to quickly absorb into the skin. So no greasy layer remains on your skin. In addition, pure prickly pear oil contains powerful substances such as antioxidants, vitamin E and minerals. These substances can all support and strengthen the renewing and restorative properties of your skin. This means you can also view prickly pear skin oil as an anti-aging serum.

This is how you use the skin oil

First clean the skin. Then pump 3 to 4 drops of pure prickly pear oil onto your palms. Finally, apply the oil to the skin with soft, circular movements. Don’t forget to moisturize the skin under your eyes as well. Prickly pear oil also helps to combat dark circles. Gently apply the oil around the eyes by tapping with your fingertips. For optimal results, use prickly pear oil in the evening. The oil can then be optimally absorbed during the night and the powerful substances can then do their work undisturbed.

Prickly pear oil for your hair

Prickly pear oil is not only a very effective and versatile form of skin care: it can also do wonders for your hair! Is it dull and dry? Then an oil treatment with this very nourishing oil can intensively care for and restore your hair.

This is how you use the hair oil

Apply a generous amount of prickly pear oil to the hair, leave it on for 15-20 minutes under a shower cap and wash out with lukewarm water for healthy and shiny hair!

Prickly pear oil for your nails

In addition to the skin and hair, pure oil from the kernels of the prickly pear can also be used to treat nails and cuticles. The oil can help prevent inflammation of the cuticles and strengthen fragile nails. When you use the oil on your skin, you will notice that some residual oil remains in your hands. You then use this leftover to massage your nails and cuticles. This way you make optimal use of the precious, pure prickly pear oil and your nails (and cuticles) get some extra care.
