What is Aleppo soap?

Aleppo soap is a hard soap that is made by hand. Although the exact origin is unclear, the soap gets its name from the city of Aleppo in Syria. However, ‘Aleppo soap’ is not the only name that the vegetable soap from Aleppo is known for. This hard, compact soap with a delicious and characteristic laurel scent is also called ‘savion d’Alep’, ‘laurel soap’, ‘Syrian soap’ or ‘ghar soap’.

How do you make Aleppo soap in the traditional way?

Aleppo soap is usually made from olive oil, lye and bay berry oil. Traditionally, soap is made using a ‘heating process’. The olive oil is first boiled underground in a vat with water and lye for three days. When the oil reacts with the water and lye, a thick liquid soap is created. Bayberry oil is then added. After the soap and bay oil have been mixed, the new mixture is poured onto a large wax paper on the floor. At this point in the making process, aleppo soap has a green color. The soap must then cool and harden for a day. To get the soap as smooth as possible, the workers walk over large, flat masses of soap with planks on their feet. Once the aleppo soap has hardened, the plate is cut into cubes. Once sufficiently dried, the soap blocks must mature further for another six months to a year in an underground chamber or the soap is dried in the sun. Did you know that the soap loses approximately 90% of its weight during drying? During the ripening process, all kinds of chemical changes occur naturally in the soap. Over time, the moisture content of the soap is reduced. This ultimately makes aleppo soap hard and long-lasting. Moreover, this explains why Aleppo soap looks yellowish-white on the outside and is still green on the inside.
